About the Department of Communication Disorders
The aim of the department of Communication Disorders is to identify people with communication disorders and provide appropriate treatment and therapy so that they can be rehabilitated in the mainstream of the society. Moreover, the department is determined to produce skilled human resources and conduct different researches in the concerned field.
The department of Communication Disorders formally started its journey in December 12, 2013 through the decision of Academic council meeting in University of Dhaka. From 2015-16 session the department has started BSS honors program. The total seat number is 40, of which 20 seats are reserved for the students of the faculty of Arts and 20 for the students of the Faculty of social Sciences.
For the students who have successfully completed the honors course, the department starts a regular master’s program from 2019-20 session. Apart from regular programs, the department runs a professional masters program called PMSLP. Currently total 50 students are studying in this professional program including speech and language therapists, audiologists, special school teachers and doctors. Students from both regular and professional programs have to attend mandatory clinical practices.
Along with few specialist part time faculties, the department possesses 05 full time faculty members.
In 2019 the department of Communication Disorders has organized different co-curricular and clinical activities. For example, it has assessed speech and language problems of persons suffering from different communication disorders as a part of observing Autism Awareness Month-2019. The department has taken an initiative to regularly run a communication clinic in the premise of the department. In addition, the department has also observed Down Syndrome Awareness Month (October-2019), in 2019 in collaboration with Down Syndrome Society of Bangladesh, Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital and AMDA, Bangladesh.
